How SAD Light Therapy Works
One among the recommended and proven effective treatment to seasonal effective disorder is the SAD Light Therapy . The intention of this therapy is to mimic the light people usually get during summer and spring. Since sunlight has a shortened period during winter and fall, lack of daily average amount of sunlight may result to increase in melatonin. When this happens, circadian rhythm or more popularly known as body clock will fall out of time. As a result, it will be the start to a stressful night of trying hard to get some sleep. This is directly being corrected by undergoing phototherapy or light therapy during winter and fall.
Absence of light on the other hand reduces serotonin which results to trigger depression. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which influence mood, the reason why drop of such may cause chronic sadness, moodiness, distressed, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and hopelessness. To counter these symptoms, presence of light should be incorporated. For this instance, phototherapy could be a big help if done correctly.

SAD Light Therapy Guide
This kind of therapy can be done easily just by sitting or standing next to the light within the prescribed or instructed effective range for several minutes daily for a couple of days. It is important not to skip a day nor not to change or alter time of phototherapy session from day to day.
Commonly, phototherapy is instructed to be done during waking up time in the morning, for about thirty minutes or more, depending on your SAD case severity. This is because lights absorbed by the eyes activates the hormones that dictates the brain to get up and be active for the day and automatically make you inactive by night by dictating your body clock to sleep. This is where the hormone called melatonin allows back the circadian rhythm or body clock to its normal mode.
Excess minutes or time of phototherapy may result to hyperactivity and thus endangers your circadian rhythm to alter. On the other hand, shortage of light exposure during waking up time may still result to seasonal affective disorder. Presence of a certain amount of light for several minutes first thing in the morning or SAD Light Therapy also improves the production of serotonin, another hormone which manipulates the mood. Huge count of serotonin in the body makes one normal happy person. The lesser its count, the sadder the emotion will be which drastically change a person to experience sudden depression. If depression is not treated immediately, it might result to bipolar disorder or the worse disorder than seasonal affective disorder.

Do take note that undergoing phototherapy requires real SAD lamps, and not improvised as much as possible. It is because manufactured SAD lamps emit reduced UV and heat which might affect your eyes and skin badly during the entire therapy treatment. Manufactured SAD lamps commonly emits 10,000 lux of full bright light spectrum which only said amount of light and above when received by the eyes actually reduces melatonin and produces serotonin. Lower light capacity of 5,000 lux and below are what we usually receive from the office lights, house lights and street lights.
Remember as well not to stare directly to the lights during phototherapy. Either blindness or eye illness shall await you if you do so. One only needs the back of the eye to absorb the light during therapy period, therefore it would be better to do some task while standing or sitting on a prescribed distance usually about nine inches next to the SAD lamp. Seasonal affective disorder could be worse or worst if SAD Light Therapy procedures are not followed aptly.Check out Sunlight SAD Light
